THE JOHN ZORN CONCERT
28 Janauary 2000
John Zorn for those of you donŐt know is a saxaphone player. He plays jazz . He plays rock. He plays classical. He plays wired shit. Frank Zappa was my hero. But not any more . John Zorn reaches beyond that and gives.
So it was the other day, or was it yesterday we went to see the big John Zorn at the Barbican Center in the middle of London.
At the bar we drunk many beers before the concert. "What will he do tonight" we thought to our selfs. "Will he play his saxaphone? Will he stand alone in the shadows? Or will he not be there at all?" This we did not know . But soon we were to find out. We drunk our four beers each and went into the stadium.
The lights dimmed. The audience was hushed. Men apeared with musical things,
One with a cello. Another with a violin. One more with a trumpet. A drummer and John Zorn himself on sax.
'Ok everybody' said Zorn to the audience. 'We're going to do a piece called "Shit fire."'
They go into it. Lots of a tonal sax and nasty drums. After they finish, which is twenty minuites the audience claps franticaly. Then John Zorn says ' Ladys and gentlmen . I want to introduce to you on trumpet Muscle Pig'.
The crowed cheers. On comes this two hundred pound pig . His arse is full of brown stains and spots. He squats and puts a trumpet up his arse and blows. He is brash but eliquant.
'Take this you fuckers' he says as he rasps a loud note out of his arse,
The crowed cheers. 'Of course , flatulence' they say. 'The only disposible art form.'
Then John Zorn introduces his lead singer. 'This is Mad Sod the scientist. He's going to sing you a few songs. The fist one is called "Powerd by guts" Take it away boys.'
The band strike up. Mad Sod the Scientist sings.
'I"ve eaten beetroot.
I"ve eaten cabige
I've even had eggs for tea.
Now my guts are a rumbling .
Ready to gust out a message of love.
Powerd by guts itŐs the only way.
Powerd by guts do it to day.'
Mad sod sung many songs. Songs like "Nice people must die". "Stop me before I fart". And "Big juicy nuts". The concert went on for two hours. What a wounderful night it was.
